IC Protocol Updates and Forum Digest

• ckBTC: a canister-issued bitcoin twin token on the IC

  • ckBTC has been upgraded to support ICRC-2 standards, with ledger, index, and archive canisters upgraded. The minter now allows for a simpler ckBTC → BTC flow.

• Breaking Changes in Ledger ICRC/ICP JavaScript Libraries

  • The ic-js library has undergone significant changes, relocating ICP ledger-related features from @dfinity/nns to @dfinity/ledger-icp and ICRC ledger-related features to @dfinity/ledger-icrc. @dfinity/ledger is currently available on NPM but will be deprecated and retired at some point.

• IC topology series - Node diversification part I

  • This post provides a preliminary assessment of node decentralization, with future posts exploring more metrics and strategies.

• Increasing subnet storage capacity and introducing resource reservation mechanism

  • Oct 6, The replica version 76fd768b 3 has increased the subnet storage capacity from 450GiB to 700GiB, marking the first milestone in a larger effort to push the storage capacity into terabytes. Historically, Genesis had 3.2TB of NVMe space, but node providers and DFINITY engineers have increased this to 32TB and optimized the state manager, enabling further storage capacity increases.

• Import canister QOL

  • Oct 5, Motoko is introducing a quality of life feature that improves the importation and management of canisters. The feature allows for easy retrieval and management of candid files using the dfx deps feature.

• Stable Structures: Removing the Bounded Size Requirement

  • Oct 6, BTreeMap V2 is now the default implementation, with an expected API in the upcoming production release. Fuzz tests have not found any issues.

    • Target: still allow developers to specify bounds, as that can be useful in making memory optimizations internally, but it would be optional.

    • Solution #1: Introduce “Unbounded” types.

    • Solution #2: Merge the BoundedStorable trait into the Storable trait.

  • ELNA: Team @elna_live completed Liquidity Bootstrap Pool on Sonic, welcomed two new devs, completed code cleanup and refactoring, worked on custom LLMs configurable on-chain, and reworked quarterly timelines.

General Regulations

• The market for tokenized assets could spike to $16 trillion by 2030, according to a report by consultancy firm Boston Consulting Group.

• CMCC Global has raised $100 million for a new fund, the Titan Fund, to invest in Hong Kong-based Web3 companies, including gaming, metaverse, and NFTs, with State Street as administrator and EY as auditor.
