General Regulations

  • The Hong Kong Securities and Investment Institute (HKSI) is getting ready to roll out a bunch of programs and workshops on virtual assets in the coming months, the South China Morning Post reported on Sunday. A training institute in Hong Kong is set to prepare virtual asset traders with the requisite expertise for industry-specific operations.

  • The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) issued a set of detailed proposals on how crypto companies within the European Union should be authorized, the first use of new powers given under the bloc’s Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) law.

  • Ripple scored a partial victory in its fight with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in a court ruling that brought a modicum of regulatory clarity for the cryptocurrency industry. The sale of Ripple’s XRP tokens on exchanges and through algorithms did not constitute investment contracts, the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of New York ruled Thursday. But the institutional sale of the tokens did violate federal securities laws, the court said.

Industry News

  • Bitcoin developer Entero Positivo launched “BIP39Colors” last month, an open-source tool that can convert one’s BIP39 mnemonic phrase into a series of colors, and vice versa.“You can give one color to your mother, another inside your [website], another one written in a web design book... and in the future recover your seed from these agnostic colors,” he wrote.

  • Hong Kong-compliant exchange Hashkey Pro is expected to receive approval to upgrade its license in the next few weeks and begin providing virtual asset services to retail investors. Currently only BTC ETH USDT USDC USD and one STO token are available on Hashkey Pro.

  • Coinbase said Wednesday its wallet product will support encrypted messaging. The new feature lets any two Ethereum addresses communicate – provided they both plug into the same messaging backbone, a communications protocol called XMTP.
